Durban - Making music for the world to see, talented traditional singer Vijayluxmi Balakrishna is on her way to India to perform at the Sri Giridhar Dham Ashram in Vrindavan.

The Akhand Kirtan, a night of worship, will take place tomorrow and will be hosted by the spiritual head of Bhakti Margh, Swami Viswananda. The 50-year-old singer is expected to perform a myriad of devotional songs for devotees from around the world.

She will share the stage with the Gauteng Unity Raam Bhajan Alliance.

Speaking about her trip, Balakrishna said: “I will be explaining the songs and the significance of Raam Bhajan, a Telugu tradition of offering worship and thanks to Lord Krishna.”

The multilingual singer will leave for Mauritius

soon after.

Balakrishna said her inspiration for Indian music, languages and philosophy was drawn from her father.

“Having been brought up in a traditional Andhra way in the Giddiah family, my talent in singing was nurtured from an early age. My uncle, Nandha Ramasamy, is a Telugu priest and my other uncle, V Latchannam, has written several books on the Telugu language.”

Balakrishna’s tutelage in carnatic music began under musicologist Dr S Ramanathan and Srinivasa Rao.

She has evolved a unique singing style after being exposed to different genres.

Balakrishna is able to sing in Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati and Hindi and was employed as a cultural promoter by the Department of Education and Culture.
