Two killed in horror crash in Pinetown

Durban - Two people were killed on Tuesday evening in what paramedics have described as a "horror crash."

The accident took place on Shepstone Road near Chelsea Avenue in New Germany at around 9 pm, said Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson. 

"Rescue Care Paramedics arrived on the scene to find carnage. A police vehicle and a car had collided before the police vehicle overturned coming to rest on its side. 

"Two occupants from the car a male and a female were found to be severely entrapped in the wreckage. They had sustained major injuries and when assessed by paramedics it was found that they had passed away due to the severity of their injuries. 

"The policeman and two other occupants from the vehicle had sustained moderate injuries and were stabilised on the scene by Advanced Life Support Paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required."

 At this stage the events leading up to the crash is unknown however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.

On Tuesday the City announced that it had started a week long road safety programme leading up to the Easter weekend. 

The week-long road safety campaign is expected to cover most taxi and bus ranks, especially the long-distance public transport ranks in eThekwini.

The campaign will conclude by an awareness raising motorcade led by Mayor Zandile Gumede, which will run through the city centre on Thursday, 29 March, encouraging the community to prioritise road safety.
