The Northern Cape is home to some of the country’s most sought after tourist spots. Here are some facts about the province you should know before you plan a visit:

It is the biggest province in South Africa

Northern Cape is equivalent to the size of Germany and takes up nearly a third of South Africa. Ironically, it has one of the smallest populations in the country, with a recorded 1, 1 million people, which is around 2.3 percent of the country’s population.

Border town

Picture: Northern Cape Tourism. Northern Cape borders two African countries, Namibia in Karas and Hardap and Botswana in Kgalagadi. In South Africa, it shares a border with the North West, Free State, Eastern Cape and Western Cape.

National treasure, literally.

Kimberley is nicknamed the Diamond City. Kimberley was founded in 1871 after diamonds were discovered on a nearby farm named Vooruitzicht. Rumour has it that people visit in hopes of finding treasure.
