St Maarten - With its wheels skimming over beachgoers, this Boeing 747 looks like it’s been forced to make an emergency landing.

But at Maho Beach on the Caribbean island St Maarten, this sort of close shave takes place every day – with plane spotters and tourists turning up to watch jets drift in overhead.

As onlookers cheered and took photos, the low-flying Pawa Dominicana flight approached Princess Juliana Airport, where the runway is less than half the length of most international airports.

Thrillseekers even gather there to try to cling to a chain-link fence as the jets blast by. But signs on the beach warn visitors that getting too close can cause serious injury – or even death.
