People travelling via OR Tambo international airport could face possible flight delays following the discovery of an unattended bag by officials this morning.

Passengers were left in a panic after they had to evacuate OR Tambo international airport on Monday morning. OR Tambo spokesperson Leigh Gunkel-Keuler told IOL Travel that travellers should “anticipate some level of flight delays” following the morning’s incident.

She said: “While we cannot tell what impact this will have on our travellers, we do want to alert them on possible delays, apologise for the inconvenience that this may cause and thank them for understanding.”

She said the South African Police Services were dealing with the unattended bag, and directed all queries regarding the contents of the bag to them.

Gunkel-Keuler said police were yet to confirm a drill that was supposed to take place tonight.

“The drill will potentially take place or not. If it does, it should have minimal or no impact on the traveller,” she said.
