Call it what you want but tented camps in South Africa are on the rise. Some travellers love being in sync with nature and its beauty. Some tented camps are kitted with luxury while others have the bare essentials. Clinton Moodley reveals some of the best tented camps in South Africa:

For those people who want a full bush experience, I will recommend spending the night at Tlopi tented camp at Marekele National Park in Limpopo. The area is close to the big 5 and if you are lucky you may spot a few elephants drinking water at the river. Each tent has two beds, bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen. Outside the tent is a veranda with table and deck chairs. Barbecue facilities are available.

Thanda Safari in Hluhluwe, KwaZulu-Natal

The Tented Camp at Thanda Safari is a treat. The cosy tent has twin beds, a bathroom, outside shower and a pretty terrace that overlooks stunning forest views. With minimal electricity and lighting, this is ideal for travellers who want to enjoy camping with an added touch of glamour. If you lucky, you may hear the hyena or a big cat at night.

Tamboti tented camp at Satara Camp, Olifants, Mpumalanga

Tamboti tented camp is a small camp situated on the banks of the Timbavati River on the western boundary of the Kruger National Park. The tents are kitted with a fridge, standing fan and small veranda.  Communal ablutions and communal kitchens are also available. Among the highlights include seeing the Tamboti trees, baboon, black backed jackal and the blue wildebeest. Guests have ultimate privacy but can also enjoy the company of other guests at the boma.
