Managing Director for MSC Cruises South Africa Ross Volk took time of his busy schedule to chat to Clinton Moodley about cruising, his travels and jetlag.

Can you describe Ross Volk?

I strive for excellence, I am hands-on and I am determined.

How did you get into the cruise industry?

I joined MSC as their Chief Financial Officer in 2015.

What is a typical day for you like?

My mornings are usually focused on sales statistics and results and responding to important emails. During the cruise season, it is very challenging to identify a normal day as no day is ever the same. A day generally consists of meetings with the management team on strategy and current affairs.

How do you overcome challenges?

I practically assess the issue and work through a solution pragmatically.

You travel a lot, how do you deal with jet lag?

Sleep based on the destination time zone.

When you are not working, what do you do to unwind after a long day?

I spend time with my family and attempt to play golf.

What is your favourite destination?

The bush. It's peaceful and allows me time to disconnect as there is limited connectivity.

If you were president for 24 hours, what would you do?

Enforce the rule of law and ensure corrupt officials are removed from office and prosecuted.

Cruising has become an affordable holiday choice. Why should people book one?

One of the most appealing aspects of cruising is the value for money offering you get with your cruise fare, including a choice of accommodation options, mouth-watering cuisine, first-class entertainment, and the opportunity to visit another country. There's also drinks packages available, which means you do not have to spend unnecessarily.

What are the 5 things every cruiser should bring on their next cruise?

A good book, a healthy appetite, sunscreen, a camera and their camera.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Leading cruises to being one of the top holiday choices. I also want to become a successful leader in the wider business space.

What is the motto you live by?

Always work hard and it will pay off.
