Bloemfontein - Suffering from selfie envy? We’ve got some of the best spots on the Gariep Route to get you more Instagram followers faster than you can say “what!”

A favourite among backpackers and road trippers, the route takes you through quaint villages and undiscovered gems just waiting to be explored.



The wild fields around Smithfield is an artist’s dream. The mountains in the background and windmill silhouette adds that wow factor to an impromptu group selfie.

Previously the spot of a former concentration camp during the Anglo-Boer War, the atmosphere surrounding the area is sombre.

Gariep Dam

The scenic Gariep Dam forms the backdrop of the Upper Gariep Route. Breath in the fresh crisp air and be one with nature!

Oviston Nature Reserve

The reserve is one of three that surrounds the dam. Imagine corn-coloured grass and brilliant blue skies.
