My perfect 'treetop getaway'

Once in awhile you want a getaway to a place that rustic and culturally significant at the same time. For me, Umhambi Lodge in Richards Bay is exactly that type of place.

Keeping to the theme of an ethnic African style guesthouse, 3 star Umhambi Lodge is in sync with nature. Log cabin inspired accommodation sets the tone for a cosy and warm stay with loved ones.

During our recent trip to Richards Bay with Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, we spent a night at Umhambi Lodge. There were some media who stayed at the lodge a year ago, but did not like it.

However, their perception changed after seeing the work done to spruce up the place.

I had a ‘climb’ up to my accommodation, but I did not mind as the stunning view below me was breathtaking. It was like I had my own little ‘treehouse’.

After our day’s busy schedule, we checked into the lodge to freshen up for a night out at the Neighbourhood Shisa nyama, not far from where the lodge is located.

Vanessa, one of the owners, was at the door passing out keys to us as we brought in our bags. I enjoyed the check in process, it was fuss free.

The day before we stayed at The Richards and the check in process did not go smoothly. We spent almost an hour trying to get the keys to our room and there was a mix up with our names.

Once up my little ‘treehouse’, I was blown away by how cosy it was. The log finishings was out of this world.

The guesthouses are kitted with handmade furniture from Bali, carpets and rugs from Egypt and sculptors and paintings from various African countries. I found the bed really comfortable. There are two pools on the property, one where we had a late night pool party.

The setting is very laid back and calm. I was disappointed that they did not have a vast vegetarian offering at breakfast. I had to settle for croissants and tea as the menu was packed with “meaty alternatives”.

When it was time to check out, Vanessa gave us each a stunning African souvenir that I will match with one of my evening looks. Umhambi made an impression on me, and I will definitely plan another trip here.
