Locals are spoilt for choice when it comes to tourist offerings this September. September is National Tourism Month and Heritage Month- a perfect excuse to explore the country. One of the places to add to your bucket list is the Zulu Kingdom.

KwaZulu-Natal is known for its breathtaking beaches, out of this world cuisine and adventure.

The province is also home to many historical landmarks and attractions that tell stories of struggle heroes and freedom fighters.

As a KwaZulu-Natal homeboy, I try to take every opportunity to see my country and bask in its rare beauty.

So when I got an invite to spend two days with a group of Johannesburg media, I jumped at the chance of experiencing my province in a new way.

The KZN Heritage and Investment Tour, hosted by Proudly South African and Brand South Africa was a quick way to showcase the province’s gems and honour the heritage that comes with it.

One of the stops was the Luthuli Museum, a national cultural institution charged with conserving, upholding, promoting and propagating the life, values, philosophies and legacy of the late Chief Albert Luthuli.

Although this was my third visit, it was the first time I got to watch the 15 minute video of his life.

Host Thulani Thusi was able to execute a gripping tour that left me, and many of the travellers in awe.

Make sure you take a selfie with a figure of Luthuli in his house. Guests also took a tour to Dube TradePort, a business entity of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government that manages a 3,000ha infrastructure project called the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone was set up to promote local and international trade.

They have plans to build a 3-star-hotel, however officials remain mum about the project until the developer releases information.

On the second day of the tour, we got to explore the beauty of Ballito.

A fun activity for the entire family is strawberry picking at Cappeny Estates.

It just held a successful strawberry festival that saw more than 3000 people visit.

Cappeny Estates is the only commercial strawberry farm in Ballito. The 17-hectare farm, which is nestled between the rolling hills of iLembe and the Indian Ocean, was built by the Gumede family. Try not to leave without trying their scones with strawberry jam.

Foodie experiences

The North of Durban offers a range of eateries. There is the Sandbar- a pretty seaside restaurant in Umdhloti.Their menu consists of burgers, pasta, salads and a selection of fresh seafood. Their portion sizes are reasonable and big enough to share with others.

If you are looking for somewhere to go for dinner, the Beverly Hills Hotel is another good option. The 5-star-hotel has two restaurants with an al fresco dining option and a convenient retail outlet. Popular choices are their prawn and chicken curry or arancini balls: a risotto balls filled with mozzarella.
