Sex for R50 in the 'prison of love'

Only R50. That's what Chad Mills says it costs to bribe a prison warder to enjoy sex sessions - and sometimes "foursomes" - in jail with his mistress.

Mills, serving a 27-year jail term in Leeuwkop prison, outside Johannesburg, was testifying on Monday before the Jali Commission, which is probing corruption in South Africa's prisons.

He said warder Frank Scheurn, who took the bribes, was later fired for allowing a prisoner to escape and was then replaced by Thulani Sithole, who allowed him to continue his conjugal liaisons.

Mills said that after being transferred to Leeuwkop prison, he heard he could have sex in jail on condition he befriended Scheurn.

Scheurn allowed him to sleep with his mistress on four occasions between August and December 1997.

He said the maximum amount he paid for the sexual favours was R200.

Mills said Sithole also smuggled a CD player-radio set into prison for him. Similar radios were also sold to inmates in the maximum section.

He paid Sithole with a tracksuit and R150 for smuggling into his cell a radio that his mother had brought.

"I was not the only one who enjoyed the same privileges. On one occasion, myself and Petros Mphuthi (his cellmate) slept in the same visiting room with our mistresses with the full knowledge of Sithole. We organised a visit for our mistresses, and Sithole booked us out of our cells to have sex with them.

"I also heard in the cells that several other prisoners also enjoyed the privileges," Mills said.

Cross-examination was due to continue on Tuesday.
