Cape Town – Cape Town has been voted number one in the category “Top Cities in Africa and the Middle East” in the Travel and Leisure 2016 World’s Best Awards.

The announcement was made at a ceremony in New York on Wednesday night.

Mayoral Committee member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development, Councillor Garreth Bloor said he felt deeply honoured and proud, and thanked all those who voted for Cape Town.

“Those of us who live in Cape Town tend to take the natural beauty of our city for granted. Such accolades make us appreciate our awesome surroundings once again,” he said.

Bloor said that while the award was humbling there was still a lot of work to be done especially with the rapid rate of urbanisation.

Other recent awards include the 2015/2016 Telegraph Travel Awards’ “Best City in the World” for the fourth year running and Condé Nast’s highly-acclaimed reader’s choice award in the World’s Best Food Cities list.
