Kunguru Lodge is next to Paul Cluver wine estate, surrounded by orchards, vineyards set in lush gardens with a forest-like ambience.
Although the lodge is located just off the N2, one could be in the middle of a forest. An hour from Cape town, Kungur Lodge is managed by owner Anton Bugler and his partner Natasha, who have many years of experience in the hospitality industry. They made us feel completely at home the minute that we arrived on a cold Friday evening.
After spending only a few hours in the valley I was beginning to feel that the folk who live over the mountains in the Elgin Valley are somewhat special and that they have discovered a little piece of heaven just over the mountain.

Accommodation at Kunguru is a choice of stunning hand-crafted wooden cabins with an en-suite bathroom and patio (each one was individually crafted and designed by the owner Anton) or safari-style tents.
As a family of 4 we stayed in one of the large safari tents located on the Forest Walk (surrounded by stunning gardens and abundant birdlife). The safari tents include luxuries like electric blankets, heaters, tea and coffee and a full en-suite bathroom with a shower - think glamping - not your average tent.
Even though the resort is geared towards corporate events, it is a perfect place to base oneself while exploring the surrounding valley.

The Wildcats Restaurant and Bar is the heart of the lodge and the perfect place to unwind after a day of adventure.
Being mid-winter, the bar and restaurant were warmed not only by 2 large fireplaces but also the generous hospitality of the staff (most have been there since the resort was built).
The kitchen is run by a talented executive chef who spent a few years on a 5-star wine estate establishment - so although the surroundings are laid back and rustic - the cuisine that comes out of the kitchen is that of a 5-star establishment (at 3-star prices).

When the weather is warmer there is also the option of spit roasts or traditional braais in the garden.
As the provincial winner of the Lilizela tourism awards, Kunguru Lodge is the accommodation for Tri-Active events - which is an events company specialising in corporate adventures and team building events. Corporate companies can hire out the entire resort for their team building events. There is a large conference room next to the restaurant and bar area and there is plenty of space for break-away areas.
