The last few weeks of summer in Cape Town are here. Before the weather starts to change and the gloomy cold days approach when Capetonians begin our winter hibernation, a friend and I decided to take a weekend break in the city.

The spacious Standard rooms at Cape Milner Hotel

The Cape Milner Hotel in Tamboerskloof is offering a Last of Summer promotion which sounded like the perfect option; R850 per person sharing per night in a standard room, which includes breakfast, as well as a 3-course dinner at the exclusive 2 on Milner restaurant, if the stay is for three consecutive nights.

The hotel is idyllically nestled in the quiet suburb of Tamboerskloof, minutes from the V&A Waterfront and Camps Bay beaches, and within walking distance of the Bree Street’s trendy bars and eateries.

We arrived early evening and after settling into our spacious rooms - which had superb views of the city bowl, we popped down to the Glass Lounge cocktail and tapas bar located on the ground floor.

The Glass Lounge at Cape Milner Hotel

The Glass Lounge is exactly what it’s name suggests - with a glass roof and the mountain side view has windows from one side to the other - offering exquisite views of Table Mountain and the upper cableway.

We spent a perfectly chilled time watching the last of the summer sunsets from the comfort of the Glass Lounge with sipping on cocktails.

The clientele is a mix of locals (the Glass Lounge was even a stop on an evening of fun for a group of girls celebrating a bridal shower) and international visitors.

We heard a few English, German and Dutch accents thrown into the mix over drinks..

The pool area at The Cape Milner Hotel

The pool is sheltered from the wind and even though the days are not as warm as they were a few weeks ago, we spent a few hours reading, sipping cocktails on the pool deck.

Restaurant 2 on Milner

Breakfast and dinner is served in the elegant 2 On Milner restaurant.

For dinner I began with Lobster Bisque - full flavoured rich and creamy. My friend chose the Palm Heart Veloute - which as it’s name implies was soft and velvety in texture.

Mains - I had the Rosemary Glazed Lamb shank with mash and ratatouille vegetables which was soft, tender and succulent, while my friend chose the 200g Ostrich steak - spiced and seared to perfection.

To end the meal we both opted for the Trio of Sorbet, made from fresh seasonal fruit.
