When Cathy and Stewart Entwistle arrived at Val du Charron 12 years ago it was a fruit farm with open sewage systems and dilapidated buildings dating back to 1699.
The couple fell in love with the farm and soon set about renovating the existing buildings adding a new restaurant, cellar and accommodation.
Their energy and passion for the estate exudes from every inch of Val du Charron. Cathy, an actuary by profession, set about studying winemaking at Elsenburg whilst Stewart focussed on developing the estate into a luxury five-star property.
Their mission was to create a completely holistic experience at Val du Charron - offering guests an opportunity to enjoy the wine, food, accommodation and the surrounding valley and mountains. With their vision and dedication what they have achieved in 12 years is remarkable.
Visitors have the option of either the exclusive 5-star suites - which offer complete privacy and the ultimate in luxury accommodation or the modern and stylish 4-star guesthouse.
There are three 5-Star suites each with its own private patio with fireplace, lounge area and plunge pool overlooking the vineyards.
I stayed in the 4-Star guesthouse. which has 16 spacious rooms and a family room, each with its own balcony offering majestic views over the Hawekwa mountains.
Waking up to soft mist rolling over the mountains and a slight dewy drizzle, the valley was still except for the occasional glimmer of humanity.
As the sun erupted over the top, the mist evaporated and the mountains appeared as a bright canvas, ready for a new day
Guests have plenty of space to relax, with a lounge and reading area, large outdoor patio and pool deck and kids play area.
Theatre of Wine:
The theatre of wine has been called the most unique wine tasting experience in the world. It takes visitors through a theatrical journey as a professional actress - known as the Black Countess, focus on 3 blends, who become the stars of the show. The show has become so popular that it has been translated into French, Italian, German and Flemish.
With panoramic views of the mountains, vineyards and olive orchards from inside and the outside deck, The Grillroom is stylishly decorated with prints of indigenous cattle.
The Grillroom offers one of the most extensive selections of steaks in the Western Cape and is nirvana for lovers of red meat. The menu o ptions include grain-fed and grass-fed beef, dry or wet aged, oxtail, brisket, marrow bones, venison, pork and chicken, along with seafood and vegetarian options. The friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere add to the culinary experience.
Piza e Vino
The Pizzeria is a favourite with families in summer. With a sprawling terrace, there’s ample space for the little ones to run around, with the splash pad being a favourite with both adults and kids on hot days. The portions are generous and the food is freshly cooked in the traditional Italian way.
Mountain biking Trails & Hiking
The Wild Boar mountain bike trail, start and end on Val du Charron. There are 6 routes that include single tracks, open gravel roads and relaxed rides around the vineyard. Bike hire and repair services are available on the premises.
