The Dragon Mountains

The Drakensberg Mountains are simply magnificent.

The website drakensberg.org.za describes it well: "The Northern and Central Drakensberg area has some of the most beautiful scenery that can be imagined. The area falls into four valleys, beginning with the Champagne Valley in the Central Berg, through the Cathedral Peak and Didima Valley, then the Royal Natal National Park and Amphitheatre Valley, and finally the Middledale Pass Valley in the Northern Berg. Each of the four valleys has its own kind of beauty and character; all have magnificent mountain views."

The clean air, fantastic views, soaring peaks, green summers and white winters make this a great getaway destination. Each area of the Drakensberg, from the Eastern Cape, through KwaZulu-Natal and into Mpumalanga, has something different to offer.

Something really different is the Antbear Lodge, which is sponsoring this month’s travel prize.

The Drakensberg can get chilly (and snow-covered) in winter, so fire places are a feature to look out for when choosing a place to stay.

When you’re not relaxing on your veranda taking in the dramatic views or cuddling next to your cosy fire, there are plenty of fun activities. Hiking, horse trails, hot-air ballooning, quad-bike trails, helicopter flips and birds of prey shows are on offer.
