If you enjoy the outdoors, there are few better places in South Africa (or indeed anywhere in the world) to visit than the Free State.

Located in the heart of the country and sandwiched between a couple of other provinces, the Free State is characterised by wide and tall mountains and horizons, vast expanses of land home to majestic farmlands and wildlife, and some of the most diverse communities in the country.

There are a range of outdoor activities popular in these parts: Golf, horseback riding, archery, hiking, abseiling, mountain biking and quad bike riding.

I'd also imagine that hot air balloon rides over its most picturesque regions. The Vaal Dam -- and other rivers and streams -- is perfect for those interested in fishing and camping.

Sprawling plains are a hallmark of the Free State. There are also areas such as this one in Clarens that are gold and beautiful.

"Golden Gate Highlands National Park derives its name from the brilliant shades of gold cast by the sun on the park's sandstone cliffs."
