London - A small beach in Wales tucked up under the wall of Tenby’s picturesque harbour was named the most beautiful in Europe, beating off competition from Portugal, Croatia and Italy.

Harbour Beach in the town Tenby, Pembrokeshire, had secured the top spot in Europe because of the quality of its water, the beauty of its environment and its reputation among visitors, said e-tourist organisation European Best Destinations.

Tenby, which lies 144km west of Cardiff, is an old medieval walled town which has three sandy beaches that stretch for 4km.

Last year the town was judged third in the British Travel Awards in its Best UK Coastal Resort category.

Ian Turner, Pembrokeshire County Council’s tourism manager was delighted at the town’s latest honours.

“They are great for raising global awareness of Tenby and Pembrokeshire as they get shared to huge audiences on social media channels,”he said.

Praia da Cova, on the south coast of Portugal, and Zlatni Rat beach, on the southern coast of the Croatian island of Brac, came second and third in the top 15 best beaches in Europe.

Isola Bella Beach, which in Italian means “beautiful island” in Taormina, Sicily, secured fourth place.

Other Italian beaches made it on to the list, along with beaches in Spain, France, Cyprus, Greece and even Scotland and Germany.

Barra Beach, on the island of Barra in Scotland, was named in 15th place.

The west of the island has white sandy beaches backed by shell-sand and machair – a strip of sandy, grassy land – and the east has numerous rocky inlets. – Daily Mail
