London - Frank Sinatra famously sang about it being the city that never sleeps and, according to a new tourist survey, New York is the best place in the world to stay up all night and party.

The Big Apple’s trendsetting nightclubs, bars and restaurants are unrivalled, said 27 000 tourists questioned worldwide in a survey by Hotels.com.

And the only city to come close to New York for a night on the tiles was Nevada’s gambling capital, Las Vegas. London, Paris and Barcelona made up the top five.

New York’s lively restaurant scene plays its part in keeping visitors smitten. According to restaurant experts Zagat, there were 119 new openings in the Big Apple in 2012, with an emerging trend towards “more affordable, casual dining”.

It’s estimated that around a million tourists will see in the New Year in New York, with the famous Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball Drop attracting huge crowds.

Hotels.com spokesperson Alison Couper defended Europe’s party capitals, saying: “New York and Las Vegas always provide an amazing travel adventure.

“But it is the variety among the European cities that makes them so interesting and exciting for travellers.

“There are many different experiences to be gained (in Europe), whether it’s a night out in the infamous clubs of Berlin, the floating restaurants in Amsterdam or the small, intimate bars and music venues of Paris.

“It’s nice to see London coming in above even these party capitals.” – Daily Mail
