There is a saying that goes: “There is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless”. And locals like Clarissa Jones, 31, from Long Island, agrees.

“New York is one of those places that everyone wants to see once in their life. It is always beaming with travellers who are curious to know more about the city and take in the sights,” she said.

Jones shares some insider tips for New York travellers:

Book your flights early:

Travellers flock to New York all year long, which is why Jones believes that travellers should be on the lookout for discounts months before their travel date.

“As the dollar is stronger than the rand, South Africans should try their best to do as much research on deals before you book that flight,” she said.

Sidewalks are New York’s highway:

The sidewalks of New York has long been a fascination for travellers. However, many travellers use it as a place to take selfies and marvel at the buildings around them- much to the annoyance of some New Yorkers. Jones said that travellers who did this disrupted traffic flow of locals heading to work.

Use the train:

Jones believes the Subway is the best way to get around. “Check with your hotel about the best subway routes to take and they will be more than happy to help. If you are afraid of getting lost while taking the subway, a taxi is a better option. The drivers are always at hand to share some tips with travellers,” said Jones.

Shop in SoHo:

SoHo is known for its designer boutiques and trendy art spots. And, according to Jones, it is a must for travellers who could not resist a shopping spree or two.

“Visiting SoHo is an experience. There are many shopping and quaint restaurants that will keep you occupied for hours."

Marvel at Manhattan:

Manhattan, known as The City by locals is the commercial, financial and cultural centre of New York.  Nearby attractions include Times Square, Central Park and The Empire State Building.
