Sureshnie Rider, known to her fans as “Sush”, is a 5FM DJ and presenter of the Top40. She is the production manager for SABC’s 3Talk with Noeleen. She also co-hosted the Wesbank Super Series Overdrive show on M-Net Supersport 2. She is married to Leigh Rider, and they have a one-year-old daughter, Pavani-Milan.

How widely have you travelled?

I have had a fair share of seeing SA as well as some countries abroad. I’ve been very lucky to see some of my favourite places. Los Angeles was special, and to be in Hollywood was a dream come true. Italy also stands out because it was where my husband proposed. Anywhere near a revving Ferrari in Milan is cool for a petrolhead like me.

Your worst experience on a holiday?

I’ve been pretty lucky when it comes to disasters. Thankfully, it’s been pretty awesome – maybe the holidays were too short.

Your funniest experience?

Gosh! I’m not sure it’s funny, but highly embarrassing. I visited the Hollywood branch of Zara recently, and tried on a gorgeous anglaise dress. The assistant zipped me in it and the zipper got caught in the lace. An entire team of assistants had to come into the dressing room and eventually cut me out of the dress. Oh the horror!

What do you avoid during a holiday?

I try to avoid food from street vendors. I have always been warned about trying this because not all stalls maintain the best health and hygiene conditions.

Your favourite restaurant and food during your travels?

I always try to sample that country’s line of Eastern cuisine. When I was in Los Angeles recently, attending the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, I was quite addicted to Mexican food – the closest I could get to something spicy.

Your favourite place to have sundowners on your travels?

I don’t drink alcohol, but the one time I did have an amazing sundowner in the Kruger Park with my husband Leigh, and it was overlooking the most magnificent sunset. It looked like the sky was having its first kiss with the earth.

As a seasoned traveller and flyer can you share some tips?

Pack light; you will shop. Make copies of all of your travel documents. Learn about the language and terrain you’re visiting so that you don’t get too lost. Never convert the monetary value into rands as it will take away from your enjoyment of buying something you’ve worked for. - Weekend Argus
