International and local visitors to Umlazi Mega City are contributing to the growth of township economy. Carmen Collison, the Retail Asset Manager of majority shareholder, SA Corporate Real Estate, said the R370 million investment to extend the mall was testament to its success and an indicator that investors remained confident that so-called township economies would continue to grow.

Since it was developed in 2006, Umlazi Mega City has been a pioneer of the township shopping experience. The relaunched Umlazi Mega City boasts an additional 19,000m² of retail space, almost doubling the total lettable area to 52 000m².

An average of 1.3 million shoppers visit Umlazi Mega City each month. It is believed that many travellers to the mall enjoy being immersed with local culture and cuisine. Unlike ordinary malls, visitors are able to see a new side to Durban, one that is able to include a township experience.

Travellers to Umlazi Mega City can enjoy top of the range shopping from some of the country’s major retailers and food offerings.
