New Delhi - The facade of India's landmark Taj Mahal is getting a makeover.

The building's stone has darkened more and more through years of exhaust fumes and visitors touching it.

The originally white-coloured stone will be covered with an especially calcareous, cleansing clay.

After it dries, the clay will rinsed off along with carbon black, according to the Times of India.

The work will be spread out over six months - stone by stone -so that the Unesco World Heritage site can remain open for visitors. - Sapa-dpa
