Not often does someone get a chance to spend the night on the Great Wall of China to soak up all its historical and architectural glory.

But, that will change when Airbnb chooses four lucky people to experience this World Wonder between September 4-7, 2018.

Unfortunately, this trip of a lifetime will not be opened to South Africans. This is due to the fact that there would be a different set of Ts and Cs for every country and the competition is only open to the countries that have the highest number of travellers to China each year.

The competition will see the travellers spend the night in a custom-designed bedroom created within a centuries-old tower.

According to the listing, the room will have 360-degree views of the Great Wall and the perfect vantage point to see the moon and stars.

Inside, luxurious linen, furniture and lit candles will create an ambience.

Known as a World Wonder, The Great Wall was built as a border to protect Chinese states against raids centuries ago. Millions of travellers came from across the world to visit this site annually. Co-Founder and Chairman of Airbnb China, Nathan Blecharczyk, said this will help showcase the Great Wall and promote sustainable tourism to China by spotlighting wide-ranging efforts to preserve the Wall's deep heritage and bring Chinese culture to life.

The prize will include flights, the overnight stay, an intimate gourmet dinner, traditional Chinese music experience, a sunrise hike through China’s breathtaking countryside, an educational on the Great Wall and additional Airbnb Experiences.

Blecharczyk said it had been an honour to work with historians and preservationists groups in Beijing to bring this once-in-a-lifetime experience to the world.

“We are so proud to partner in this truly collective effort to highlight such an incredible landmark that now serves to unify people rather than divide them.

“This incredible experience speaks to the growing interest and popularity of Airbnb in China, where there have been over 10 million guest arrivals by Chinese travellers in Airbnb listings around the world since 2008,” he said.

To enter, people will have to tell Airbnb why it is more important now than ever to break down barriers between cultures and how you want to build new connections in 550 characters or less. Entries close on August 11.
