Los Angeles - Sound baths used to be the preserve of esoteric healing centres, but this exotic way to relax, lying on a mat as transcendental-type noises spill over you, is becoming a mainstream experience in California.

A growing number of spas and yoga studios are offering customers sound-bath sessions, according to the New York Times.

The theory is that it aligns the body and soul, using sound and oscillating sound energy.

“It's great for dealing with stress,” says Jamie Ford, owner of The Sound Space. Ford, whose principal sounds come from her 10 gongs, says she conducts up to seven sound baths a week herself.

Up to 50 participants meet every Saturday at the Unplug Meditation studio in Santa Monica to take part in a 75-minute sound bath.
