TOP musicians Jimmy Nevis, Salome, Paxton Fielies, Garth Taylor, Sasha-Lee Davids and Karin Kortje will put everyone in the festive mood at a live music festival in Cape Town.
After a Covid-19 induced hiatus from live concerts, the Unity on the Square music festival will give local artists the opportunity to perform on stage after the pandemic closed theatres and venues for most of the past year.
The event will take place in Greenmarket Square on Thursday, December 16.
People can look forward to a star-studded line-up and David Kramer langarm bands, Malay choirs and a marimba band as the city gets into the holiday spirit.
Unity on the Square was the brainchild of popular performer Loukmaan Adams, who is hosting the event under the banner of his new company, Loukmaan Adams Productions.
Adams said December 16 traditionally “gives people a taste of the festivities to come and gives them a sense of what the season is going to be like”, he said.
He added: “I thought we can still do that but just on a smaller scale.”
The City of Cape Town and the Western Cape government have partnered with Adams to host the event.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said unity and compassion were an important part of Reconciliation Day, especially during a pandemic that poses challenges to the world.
“Platforms like Unity on the Square provide all of us with an opportunity to get together with people from different backgrounds to honour a special public holiday and enjoy local music.”
He added: “The City of Cape Town is proud to partner with local artists to commemorate the Day of Reconciliation.”
Vendors will be selling food and drinks at the event.
Adams said he could not wait for the artists to perform before an audience again.
“I’m looking forward to hearing the sound of laughter, applause, and a sense of unity and enjoyment in a safe space.”
He added: “The last two years have been tough and we need some laughter and positivity again.”
The event will take place between 1pm until 9pm.
Tickets range from R75 to R350 and can be purchased on Quicket.
