South African artist and former X-factor winner Steven Lee Lewis has released a new single, which was a collaboration with international artists Fergie and Wyclef Jean.
Lewis won the Motorokr Star competition in 2010, a worldwide talent competition hosted by Motorola. The competition winner received the opportunity to fly to New York and record a song with the two celebs better known for their roles in the pop music group, the Black Eyed Peas.
Lewis described it as the best experience of his life and was grateful for the opportunity to work with them.
“I got to learn so much from both of them. I got to understand why their careers have progressed so well.”
He added: “After spending 20 minutes with both of them, I felt like I knew them my whole life. I thank God for this opportunity that I will never forget.”
The track titled Holiday was written and produced by Wyclef Jean, and Fergie led vocal production.
“We were inspired by the feeling you get when you let your hair down on holiday, and we just wanted to spread a positive message of having fun.”
Lewis got to fly to the United States and record the track at Platinum Sound Studios in the Big Apple. Although the track was recorded in 2010, it was only released recently due to issues regarding who owned the rights to the track, after Motorola became insolvent.
“The rights are mine now but because I was part of X-factor at the time, I couldn’t release a solo because I was part of a group,” he said.
The Johannesburg-born artist is also popularly known for winning X Factor South Africa in 2014 as part of the group ‘Four’.
Since, he has had the opportunity to open for many other celebs when they performed locally. Amongst the stars he’s opened for, Lewis said that One Direction and Nicki Minaj were his highlights.
Lewis plans to release an album next year and will be releasing another single soon. His advice to aspirant singers and songwriters is to know their strengths.
“Believe in yourself because if you don’t, nobody else will!”
