Cape Town - Delft police are investigating the murder of a taxi driver who was shot and killed in Owen Madikane Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident are being investigated.

“According to reports, members of Delft responded to a shooting incident at Owen Madikane Street, Delft, where they found the body of a 46-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was declared deceased by paramedics. The motive surrounding this incident is yet to be determined and no arrest has been made,” he said.

Delft Community Policing Forum(CPF) chairperson Pastor Charles George said the government doesn't have a grip on crime.

“When it happens within the taxi industry, we need to bring in reinforcements to control it, as innocent people's lives are at stake.

“We are hoping this matter gets resolved because we cannot afford to live in this type of environment, especially after Covid-19. We need to ensure that we support the economy and get people to work,” he said.

Spokesperson for the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) Gershon Geyer said: “(We) got news of a shooting in Delft where a driver was shot and killed this morning. We believe that it’s not taxi related. Our condolences to the family of the driver.”

Anyone with information regarding the shooting incident is requested to call Delft Saps on 021 954 9011 or 082 522 2036.
