The City of Cape Town has called on the Mother City’s residents to join its spring cleaning campaign.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis announced a #SpringCleanCT campaign in a bid to clamp down on illegal dumping and littering in the metro.

On Thursday, Hill-Lewis will join Mayco member for Urban Waste Management Grant Twigg to launch the initiative on September 1.

As many as 300 people are expected to participate in the clean-up operation, including law enforcement officials who will be on the lookout for illegal dumping and issuing fines for littering.

“We are calling on residents, schools, businesses and community groups to join the #SpringCleanCT campaign,” said Hill-Lewis.

“Let’s get our city looking sparkling clean and fresh this spring, including our parks, public spaces, beaches, rivers and roads.

“Change is easy; first, none of us should ever litter, then, each one of us can tell someone to stop littering, or to pick up their litter when we see them doing it. And each of us can take a few seconds to pick up some litter ourselves.”

Since the launch of the clean-up campaign earlier this year, more than 110 clean-ups have been organised by community organisations and ward councillors.

In January, the City reported having spent R52 million to clear up illegal dumping sites and highlighted nearly 3 000 sites across the metro as being the biggest contributors to the headache.

The City urged residents to report illegal dumping, warning that those caught dumping could be fined up to R5 000, have their vehicle impounded, or face a two-year prison sentence.

There is also a reward of up to R5 000 offered for every fine issued and conviction secured. Residents can report tip-offs to 0800 110077.
