Dear Editor

An article with the headline “Ex-MK operative promises to shake things up in the Cape Town” by Bulelwa Payi was published September 4, 2021.

The lack of fact-checking in this article is almost irresponsible. It suggests that more than R11 million is available to every citizen of City of Cape Town and shows that both Neil de Beer and the journalist cannot do simple arithmetic ... R59 billion divided by 5 million citizens equals R11 800 per citizen per year, which by the way, mostly goes to paying salaries of the City of Cape Town staff.

Unless, I missed something, the journalist quoted Neil de Beer, this so-called business mogul, verbatim to make him look like a fool. Still, I think such gross errors make your publication lack credibility. Best regards

Jean-Pierre Ramackers

UIM leaders Neil de Beer’s spokesperson, Warren Schwulst apologised for the “human error” and the added slip zeros.

Schwulst said: “The point we (UIM) were making is that even though there’s R59 billion budget allocation people get nothing. Apologies for the error.”
