Cape Town - A community is reeling and angry after a second woman was brutally murdered in the same street where another woman was killed earlier this year.

Today, the community of Wesbank along with organisations such as Balls Not Guns, Woman’s Voice and the Mfuleni Youth Desk formed a human chain in their plight against gender-based violence as Women’s Month begins today.

This was after a 28-year-old woman was stabbed to death on Sunday, allegedly by her boyfriend, in Mangold Street.

The first incident took place in February, when Kaylan Dewaal’s throat was slit.

She had been out with a friend, just doors away from her home, when tragedy struck in Mangold Street.

Police have since confirmed the latest incident.

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk explained that the suspect was still at large.

“On Sunday morning, July 31, 2022, at around 2am, a 28-year-old female was stabbed to death in Mangold Street, Wesbank, during an argument allegedly by a male suspect who she was acquainted with.

“He fled the scene and is yet to be arrested. The circumstances are being investigated by Mfuleni police.”

A community activist who helped to organise the human chain, Lindie Jacobs, said the community was disgruntled and saddened by yet another case of gender-based violence.

“The first woman’s throat was slit and now this woman has been attacked and the reality is that it happened in the same street and just months apart from one another,” she said.

“We have asked for a moment of silence and solidarity as we are thinking of women who have been attacked and we cannot wait for Women’s Day.”
