Two police constables were arrested on Wednesday after being caught red handed with a stash of drugs.

The constables who were in the possession of drugs and beer, found themselves on the other side of the law after police searched their vehicle in Edward street, Hillview.

According to an informant, Muizenberg SAPS received information about a police vehicle that was apparently hijacked and parked in Hillview.

The members of Muizenberg SAPS noticed packets of tik at the gear lever.

One of the constables then put the blame on his colleague informing the officers that it was not his, but belonged to the other constable.

It also came to light the officers were off duty while using the police vehicle.

All together 14 packets tik, five and a half mandrax tablets and four 750 ml Castle beer was confiscated.

The constable was arrested on the spot, while the other constable was detained.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the arrest.

“According to reports Muizenberg police responded to a complaint and found a male person sitting inside the marked police vehicle. Upon inspection they discovered drugs and alcohol inside the vehicle.”

Swartbooi added: “Two males, both off duty police officers, were arrested and detained. The Anti-Corruption Unit are investigating cases of dealing in drugs, possession of drugs and use of vehicles without the owner's consent.”

Once charged, the suspects are expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate court on the mentioned charges.
