Cape Town - Two men accused of killing seven-year-old Emaan Solomons appeared in Simon's Town Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Emaan was tragically killed by a stray bullet when she was caught in gang crossfire in Ocean View on Tuesday.

She was shot in the chest and hand while playing outside her Ocean View home.

Eben Basson, 27, and Chivargo Fredericks, 20, made their first appearance before Magistrate Lutfie van Rhodie. They were remanded in custody until their bail application begins on March 6.

Emaan's family was not present at court for the brief appearance of her suspected killers.

The two men are also charged with the attempted murder of Anees Davis, who they allegedly fired shots at on the same day that Emaan was killed, in the same street.

The tragic death of the young innocent girl has sparked outrage and retaliatory violence in Ocean View this week. Some community members set fire to four houses belonging to suspected gang members.

Police presence in the area was increased in the wake of the unrest, with patrols being conducted by the anti-gang unit, the City of Cape Town's law enforcement, public order police as well as officers from neighbouring stations.

Emaan was buried on Thursday, just a week after police found the body of eight-year-old murder victim Tazne van Wyk. President Cyril Ramaphosa has apologised to Van Wyk's family, saying the justice system had failed them.
