Full services resumed in Nyanga on Wednesday after nearly two weeks of disruptions following attacks in the area over the impounding of vehicles operating as taxis.

Golden Arrow Bus Services (GABS) spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer said law enforcement agencies informed them it was now safe to operate.

“Golden Arrow can confirm that full services have resumed in Nyanga and the surrounding areas and that there are no diversions in place. We are still keeping a very close eye to the situation and we endeavour to keep our passengers informed via the media or our Facebook page.

“We have been working with SAPS and law enforcement and they have deemed it safe (to operate fully),” she said.

The company previously suspended or provided limited services to the area after several of its buses and a vehicle were torched in Nyanga and Gugulethu over the last week and a half. Several private vehicles and those belonging to the City of Cape Town were also torched or stoned.

This was reportedly in response to the City’s clampdown on illegal taxi operators and ‘Amaphela’ (small vehicle taxis) in Nyanga and surrounding areas.

As a result, buses terminated services either at the Nyanga police station or at the Borcherds Quarry road near the N2.

Last week Friday chaos broke out on the N2 following an enforcement operation in which 43 vehicles were impounded.
