A man was killed and another injured following a confrontation in Bo-Kaap on Sunday night.

The incident, which took place on Chiappini Steet at 9.50pm, is said to have resulted from ongoing tensions in the area over the past two weeks.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the matter was under investigation.

“Cape Town Central police responded to a shooting in progress and on arrival on the scene found the victim lying in the street,” said Twigg.

“The victim sustained a gunshot wound to his neck and was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics. The motive for the attack is yet to be established. The unknown suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” said Twigg.

Eyewitnesses confirmed parts of a gun were found beside the victim’s body. Bullets and shell casings were also found on the road.

The victim was identified as 20-year-old Allie Vollenhoven of Van Der Meulen Street in Bo-Kaap.

According to neighbours, Vollenhoven grew up in Bo-Kaap, where his family still resides.

Vollenhoven attended Schotsche Kloof Primary School and Harold Cressy High School.

Another male was shot in the arm and the buttocks during the confrontation. He was taken to hospital when paramedics arrived on the scene. Details of his current state of health cannot be confirmed.

Ebrahiem Christian, chairperson of the Bo-Kaap Neighbourhood Watch, said he was working closely with Law Enforcement and SAPS to bring calm to the neighbourhood.

“There is a lot of speculation at this stage but no confirmed details regarding what exactly happened,” said Christian.

Christian said he had met with Law Enforcement and SAPS following a previous shooting on Chiappini Street two weeks ago. Tensions have been brewing ever since.

“No one was killed or injured then, but I said to Law Enforcement, ‘You need to up your patrols because something is going to happen’,” said Christian.

Chiappini Street is home to an informal settlement known as ‘Die Kraal’ or ‘The Infamous Kraal’ as well as ‘The Quarry,’ another informal settlement adjacent to it.

The incident took place during load shedding, but a source working closely on the matter confirmed the City’s cyclops cameras do have a UPS backup.

Neither SAPS nor Law Enforcement would confirm whether CCTV footage was made available to the authorities as yet.

Anyone with any information about this shooting incident is requested to contact Crime Stop on 0860 010 111, Law Enforcement or the Bo-Kaap Neighbourhood Watch.
