THE Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) is staging Ikigai – an exhilarating ballet inspired by Japanese philosophy.

The triple bill is built on the philosophy of life’s purpose, happiness and peace.

The latest offering from the CTCB will feature ballets from three award-winning choreographers – Jiří Kylián’s Falling Angels, Sir Frederick Ashton’s Les Patineurs and Kenneth Tindall’s Polarity.

The production will be performed in collaboration with artists from the CTCB.

The first ballet by Kylián is a masterpiece created for eight women to highlight the power of the female persona. Falling Angels is set to the score of Steve Reich and was inspired by the percussive music rituals of West Africa.

Les Patineurs (The Skaters) will be performed to music composed by Giacomo Meyerbeer. Ashton’s ballet features a party of ice skaters on a frozen pond.

The ballet depicts his virtuosic choreography style, of charming diversions in a beautiful setting.

Tindall’s Polarity was inspired by the suggestion that opposites are interconnected. The play looks at how everything is a duel between yin and yang. Where harmony and balance emerge, the only outcome can be peace.

The ballet will be on show from August 17 to 28.
