Johannesburg - South Africa's rand extended losses against the dollar on Wednesday, weakening more than 1 percent to a fresh four-year low as strong US retail figures boosted the greenback globally.

The rand hit its softest level in the session at 9.2690/dollar, the weakest it has been since April 2009.

It was the steepest decline in a basket of 20 emerging market currencies tracked by Reuters. - Reuters
