London - TV remote controls seem to have more buttons than a Space Shuttle cockpit these days.

Small wonder then that some of the elderly find it almost impossible to flick between BBC1 and ITV when they use them.

But British comedian Jenny Eclair has the answer. She wants simpler ones to be created with “big buttons”.

The star has also called for user-friendly DVD players.

Her request comes after visiting her “telly luddite” mother and discovering she could not get any BBC channels on two out of three TVs in her house and that her circa-1990 DVD player did not work.

Writing in Radio Times, Miss Eclair said: “For many older folk, the television is a lifeline. So why isn’t someone designing tellies for the old, with simple big-button remote controls and a slot in the back where you drop in the DVD and it automatically starts playing?”

She also suggested “roaming telly experts” who could pop in on users to retune channels, explain remotes and “jiggle aerials” - Daily Mail
