London - The first treatment programme for internet addicts has opened in America, with patients going “cold turkey” for the first 72 hours after admission.

Those undergoing the £9 000 (about R135 000) “digital detox” will not be allowed to use their mobile phone, computer or tablet until doctors say so.

Psychologist Kimberly Young, who founded the course, said internet addicts were defined by the effect web use had on their lives, rather than how much time they spent online.

Typical patients on the programme at Bradford Regional Medical Centre in Pennsylvania are likely to be young, male, intelligent and probably obsessed with games rather than online porn. She added: “They go online because they can become someone else and be admired for their skills.” - Daily Mail
