The next big thing in TVs

London - Admittedly, you’d never need to go to the cinema again – as long as you didn’t mind waiting for the newest releases.

But even a lifetime’s worth of tickets, popcorn and the odd hot dog thrown in for good measure couldn’t add up to the £22,500 (about R290 000) needed for Britain’s biggest television.

That’s more expensive than a VW Golf hatchback – and, at 7ft (about 2m), wider than one too.

But anyone who can afford the LG Ultra HDTV will be treated to a viewing experience that is close to Imax cinema quality.

The 84-inch, 14st television, which went on sale this month, also comes with the latest applications for on-demand films and TV programmes. The giant screen can convert ordinary television into 3D, and comes with five pairs of glasses for viewing the pin-sharp images.

Even without 3D, the ultra-high definition images are 16 times sharper than those on a normal television. Experts say the television’s picture is so technologically advanced that few broadcasters can yet take advantage of its full potential.

It may also solve family arguments. The screen is so large that it can be split, allowing viewers to watch two movies at once – and it has voice-activated and motion controls, putting an end to fruitless searches for the remote.

The television is on sale in ten stores across the country. - Daily Mail
