Another industrial strike has erupted at Eskom’s Medupi power station, which is under construction in Limpopo, as some workers appeared to be unhappy with the agreement signed between the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) and employers at the construction site.

The new strike comes exactly two weeks after Numsa ended its four-week-long industrial action, which forced the construction site to a standstill.

Stephen Nhlapo, Numsa’s sector co-ordinator responsible for Medupi, said workers affiliated with the union who returned to work when employers fulfilled their obligation were not part of the strike.

“For whatever reason it appears that some are not happy with the agreement that Numsa signed. They feel that it does not cover them,” Nhlapo said.

He said the agreement covered all workers, including those belonging to other unions as well as non-unionised workers.

It was signed by all contractors and representative unions except two small ones, which did not meet the bargaining threshold. – Londiwe Buthelezi
