More than eight million passengers passed through Cape Town International Airport last year, the Airports Company SA (ACSA) said on Wednesday.

“For the past four years, 2007 has had the highest record of passenger numbers, but this has now been surpassed,” ACSA spokeswoman Deidre Davids said in a statement.

“With just under 8.5 million passengers processed in 2011, it can be hailed (as) the year of regained growth.” Davids said the trend was extending into 2012.

In January, the number of international passengers arriving at the airport grew by 15 percent on the same month last year.

Domestically, the total number of passengers for January grew by eight percent compared to last year.

“With this steady growth, the airport has been continuously busy with January 5 peaking at just over 28,000 passengers moving through the terminal for the day,” Davids said.

“The team has been doing a sterling job given the large numbers of passengers moving through the terminal,” she said. - Sapa
