South African electricity utility Eskom is to sign the CEO Water Mandate, the company said Tuesday.

Making the announcement at the South African Water and Energy Forum (SAWEF) in Sandton, Eskom Water Procurement Manager Nandhe Govender said it is vital that Eskom plays a leadership role and it is important that it helps manage the value chain to secure future water resources.

Sasol (SOL) is also a signatory to the Water Mandate. It signed it in 2008.

The CEO Water Mandate is an initiative that grew out of a partnership between the United Nations Global Compact, the Swedish Government and a group of committed companies and specialised orgnisations dealing with the issues of water scarcity and sanitation.

Launched in 2007, it is designed as a public-private initiative with a focus on developing strategies and solutions that contribute positively to the emerging global water crisis. - I-Net Bridge
