An increasing number of well-heeled travellers will be celebrating their Christmas holidays in Europe this year, according to the latest findings in the Visa Global Travel Intentions Survey 2011 released on Thursday.

The survey of more than 1,213 affluent respondents across 19 countries and territories has revealed the UK, Italy and France as the top global destinations for the affluent traveller in the next two years. The US was the only non-European country that made it to the list.

“Europe is known for its culture, breath-taking attractions and of course, its cuisine. These factors have prompted tourists from around the world to head to Europe for their holidays,” said James Lim, head of premium products, Asia Pacific, Central Europe, Middle East and Africa at Visa.

The survey also revealed that affluent travellers spent about twice as much as the average global traveller during their most recent international trip - US$3,255 (R26,040) versus US$1,481 (R11,848).

“Over the next two years this delta is expected to decrease, with affluent travellers forecasted to spend about 1.5 times more or US$3,109 (R24,872) versus US$1,895 (R15,160) than the average traveller,” Visa said.

During their trip, affluent travellers spend 79% of their money on meals, 68% on souvenirs and gifts, and 64% each on shopping and entertainment.

Interestingly, shopping was cited as the number one reason behind why affluent travellers exceeded their planned budget during their last trip.

“Despite the global economic climate, affluent travellers remain optimistic about their holiday plans over the coming years, expecting to travel consistently throughout 2012 and 2013.”

“Affluent travellers are expected to plan about seven trips in the next two years - almost double that of the average traveller who is planning about four trips,” Visa said.

According to Lim, it was interesting to note that the state of the global economy had yet to have a significant impact on the spending habits of affluent travellers.

“We have typically noticed a decrease in budgets during such periods and even a cut-back on travel plans.”

“As such, the survey results possibility indicate a trend wherein travel has now become a necessity - be it for business or vacation - rather than a luxury for the affluent traveller,” Lim commented. - I-Net Bridge
