Striking municipal workers from the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality are believed to have petrol-bombed a car in KwaZakhele, a municipal spokesman said on Friday.
“Strike-related criminal activities took place on Thursday night when the property of a municipal staff worker was petrol-bombed,” spokesman Kupido Baron said.
He warned residents that the strike, which was in its second week, would affect services at traffic and licensing centres services in Korsten, Sidwell and Uitenhage.
The SA Municipal Workers' Union initially wanted an 18 percent increase but dropped its demand to 10 percent during negotiations with the SA Local Government Association (Salga) on Wednesday.
Salga has offered an increase of 6.1 percent.
The Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union in Cape Town said its members would take to the streets on Friday to voice their anger against Salga.
“Our members have always rendered municipal services while other unions have taken to the streets. They have now lost their patience and will be voicing their dismay with the irresponsible actions of Salga,” Imatu spokesman Mark Roman said. - Sapa
