Three in four of world’s people have cellphones

Around three quarters of the world’s population now have access to a cellphone, according to a report released yesterday by the World Bank and infoDev, its technology entrepreneurship and innovation programme. It adds that the story of cellular communications is not so much about the phone but rather how and where it is used. The number of subscriptions worldwide, both pre-paid and post-paid, has grown from fewer than 1 billion in 2000 to more than 6 billion now, of which nearly 5 billion are in developing countries. – Staff writer

JSE apologises for incorrect prices

The JSE issued a notice and an apology last night stating that closing price values for all instruments disseminated through the InfoMax Equity data records were incorrect. “This problem unfortunately does not only impact the closing price value but all other value-add fields that leverage off the closing price,” said Neil Vendeiro, the exchange’s head of market data projects and information products sales. He said the JSE had identified the root cause of the incorrect data and it would be implementing a technical fix overnight. “We will have technical people on duty tonight to check and ensure that correct values are provided,” Vendeiro said.
