The troubled Satawu's executive committee members were on Saturday meeting in Johannesburg at the back of deregistration woes and the formation of a splinter union.

The central executive committee meeting was initially meant to discuss Ephraim Mphahlele's conduct and for “bringing the union into disrepute,” the SA Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) said.

Mphahlele resigned as president two weeks ago to join a splinter union called the National Transport and Allied Workers Union.

He cited a plot to assassinate him as one of the reasons he bowed out.

Satawu said it welcomed Mphahlele's resignation “as he knew” that a motion of no confidence would be passed on him at the meeting.

Gauteng provincial chairperson Liver Mngomezulu and his deputy Reuben Molefe, who had been suspended in June, formed the new union.

Amid the resignations and suspensions, the union was threatened with deregistration over non-compliance.

The union had allegedly failed to submit financial records and membership audits.

The union has a membership of over 230 000. - Sapa
