Johannesburg - The Independent Communications Authority of SA is stepping into the elections fray as its compliance unit will probe whether two stations broke the law ahead of this month’s elections.

As the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters prepare to announce whether they will form coalitions to have control over several hotly contested municipalities such as Johannesburg, ICASA’s Compliance Complaints Committee will Wednesday morning probe two radio stations.

In a press release, the broadcasting and ICT authority says Kasie FM is charged with contravening parts of the Municipal Elections Broadcast and Political Broadcast Regulations, which provides that a broadcasting service licensee must not transmit a political advertisement immediately before or after another one.

Radio Sonder Grense is charged with contravening a section of the Electronic Communications along with a regulation of the Municipal Elections Broadcast and Political Broadcast Regulations, which provides that no political advertisement may be broadcast within 48 hours before polling commences.

The cases are being heard at ICASA’s head office in Sandton.
