Cape Town - South African power utility Eskom on Wednesday defended doing business with a company linked to the wealthy Gupta family that is accused of holding undue political sway over President Jacob Zuma.

“I cannot black-list them without a reason,” Eskom’s chief executive officer, Brian Molefe, told a parliamentary briefing, adding that he had no legal basis to block the Gupta-controlled firm as it had not been found to have broken the country's laws.

The Treasury on Monday accused Molefe of resisting attempts to investigate coal contracts between the utility and Tegeta Exploration & Resources.

Eskom has denied the accusations, saying it has been co-operating with the Treasury.
