Harmony Gold said on Friday that its Tshepong mine in South Africa remained shut and that lost production was expected to be 20 to 25 kgs of gold per day.

South Africa's third largest gold miner said on Tuesday operations at Tshepong had shut after a worker died there following a rock fall.

“Operations at Tshepong are still halted and investigations into the incident are continuing ... Looking at Tshepong's history, a production loss of between 20 to 25 kgs is anticipated,” spokeswoman Marian van der Walt said in an e-mailed response to questions from Reuters.

The mine, located in South Africa's Free State province, is Harmony's largest operation and produced 216,986 ounces of gold in the 2010 financial year, according to company data.

South Africa has the world's deepest gold mines and has a dire safety record compared with the industrialised world. Output is often lost because of stoppages while fatalities are investigated. - Reuters
